Why is this, you might ask? Sunglasses are designed to protect our eyes against strong light, blue light, and ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun.

These harsh rays are present even when we can't see the sun with our naked eye. Optometrists and other eye care professionals strongly recommend wearing a pair of quality sunglasses whenever a person is outside to prevent any damage or eye problems that could result from exposure to these UV rays.

Although eye protection is the primary objective of sunglasses, they also make a fashion statement, and many people consider them to be an all-important accessory. Designs have come a long way since sunglasses were first invented, and they are available today in a myriad of styles, ranging from multi-colored and mirrored (two-way) lenses, to frames made of plastic, nylon, metal or a metal alloy. Most celebrities own several pair of sunglasses, and are often shown on the front page of tabloids, sporting their funky eyewear.

There are several other uses for sunglasses as well. One may wear them for that "incognito" look and of course some like to wear some of the very dark lenses to try for an ultra cool look. You might also use them to hide eyes that are red or weepy.

Softer sunglass cases will prevent scratches to the lens portion of your glasses but don't offer as much protection for the frames.

Using a proper cleaning solution for the lenses is also highly recommended by both vision experts and sunglass manufacturers. These solutions may be purchased, or a homemade solution can be made from a little mild dishwashing soap and some tap water.

Always use a soft, lint free cloth while cleaning the lenses, never a paper towel, which could scratch them. After a while, dirt and dust will accumulate on the nose pads which can be annoying and visually unappealing.

To effectively remove any dirt or stains on the soft nose pads of sunglasses you can soak non-polarized lenses in water for 30 minutes to loosen the grime and then clean using a soft toothbrush. Finally you should check often to make sure those tiny hinge screws are tightened properly.

There are small eyeglass repair kits that can help you tighten the screws if needed. If you see something that seems to be majorly amiss you should take them to your eyewear professional for repair. Trying to repair a major problem with expensive sunglasses could void your warranty.

How to Use Tea Bags for Swollen Eyes

Swollen or puffy eyes are caused when fluid is trapped in the tissue under the eye. This naturally occurs more frequently in the morning, but it can be a problem with allergies, after crying or with a hangover. Any astringent will aid in reducing swollen eyes. An astringent is a chemical that constricts body tissue when applied topically. Tea bags work well because they have natural tannins that act as astringents.

Steep two tea bags in hot water. Chamomile is widely considered the best type of tea to use on swollen eyes. When the tea has steeped remove the bags and allow the wet bags to cool slightly.
Place the warm tea bag on your eyes. Leave the bags on your eyes until they start to feel cool. An alternative is to soak cotton balls with the tea directly from the bag and place the cotton balls on your eyes.
Place the wet tea bags in the refrigerator to cool. This is a matter of taste as some people prefer warm tea bags on their eyelids, and others prefer cool. Cold should act as a natural astringent so cooler tea bags often work faster, but are not as comfortable as warm tea bags.
Lie on your back for a few minutes. Consider putting a towel under your head in case liquid from the tea bags drips.

One of the great wonders of the human body is the ability of damaged cells to be repaired or replaced. Red blood cells, for instance, live for about 120 days. Each day, about 1% of your red blood cells retire to be replaced by a fresh generation. The lens of the eye is a notable exception. The cells of the lens of the eye are never replaced; the proteins of the lens are never replenished. The lens cannot repair itself; damage accumulates over a lifetime.
Cataracts are the result of gradually accumulating damage to the proteins of the lens. The most important source of this damage is exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, especially while one is young.
Behind the lens lies the retina, the thin lining of the back of the eye. The retina is the eye's miracle. This patch of tissue, about the size and thickness of a postage stamp, is able to dissolve and create a new image every tenth of a second.
Today in the United States, retinal diseases are the leading cause of blindness. Macular degeneration, the accumulation of damage in the retina, is the leading cause of blindness from retinal disease. Slowly, over the years, the macula is irreversibly damaged by exposure to UV radiation. About one third of adults over age 65 experience this steady decline of central vision, not correctable by glasses.
Excessive exposure to sunlight during early childhood is harmful to the eyes. Sunlight contains harmful UV radiation.
The risk for retinal damage from the sun's rays is greatest in children less than 10 years old, although the consequences usually do not become apparent until well after they are adults.
All children should be taught to wear sunglasses, especially between 10 AM and 2 PM, when ultraviolet exposure is the most dangerous. This is true even for children with darker eye colors, even though their darker pigments afford partial protection. Of course, children with light-colored eyes need sunglasses all the more.
Ultraviolet exposure is at its peak when children are at high altitudes, snow-covered landscapes, bright sandy beaches, or near reflective bodies of water.
All sunglasses are not the same. Effective sunglasses should block both UVA and UVB radiation. The sunglasses must be measured to block 99% to 100% of UVA or UV400 (400 nm is the wavelength of UVA radiation). Thankfully, all sunglasses block UVB radiation.
Large lenses that fit close to the eyes are best. Those that block visible blue light are even safer.
Expensive brand names and polarizing lenses are no guarantee.
Ordinary sunglasses make the situation WORSE! The dark lenses cause the pupils to dilate, allowing more of the dangerous UVA radiation to damage the lens and the retina.
